I've only once had a problem with campground water. It was a michigan state park and some ranger had shocked the manual pump well with chlorine but not posted a sign or anything that treatment was in progress. perhaps in this case a "filter" would have done me some good.
No problems with any other of the 100s of campgrounds I've visited. No filters used... shhh don't tell anyone, but sometimes I even drink from a green garden hose.
Pre-packaged bottled water is right up there with burning tires in my book of environmentally bad things to do. Especially relying on it for all consumption and cooking, that's just awful.
