It's a worry. Can't say I've actually heard of a mishap where somebody steered into the toad not knowing it was there.
Our first toads were older, and I wired into their running lights as well as the brake and tail lights. This activated the front turn signals, parking and side marker lights. I felt better about the toad back there at night. Illuminated the instrument cluster too, that gave me a chuckle.
