The key to roundabouts is their size. A larger one can function decently, because can allow 18 wheelers to get on and off safely. The smaller ones that are used instead of stop signs are hazardous because there is no room to maneuver safely.
Of course, if there is a light on one of the exit roads right after the roundabout, the whole thing ceases to function.
