I grew up in Southern New Jersey in the 70's where we had many roundabouts (we called them traffic circles). Even though these were very large, they became traffic nightmares. When my dad was teaching me to drive, his mantra on circles was, "He who hesitates is lost!"
Now, most of them are removed and replaced with a system of ramps, overpasses and traffic lights, and the traffic flow is much better.
Now, down here in Florida, I see them returning only much smaller (too small) and insane speed limits on the long approach and departure (45MPH dropping to 15MPH well before and after the roundabout with a police car sitting just around the bend). They may look quaint, but I foresee another nightmare.
