"driving" in the left lane. YES it's illegal.

Likely because you only need to deal with others on your right. If on a two lane the right lane deals with traffic to the left, and merging traffic to the right.
On a three lane the middle needs to deal with traffic on both sides.

I really don't like towing in the right lane, while I do it on a two lane highway, too many people don't know how to merge. I love the ones that don't look to their left until they are ready to pull over and then there is a 60' TV and trailer next to them!
