Driving the ALCAN highway

My wife and I are planning a trip to Alaska via the ALCAN. Anybody have any tips on making the trip across? We are looking at June - August. Anyone carry firearms in their coach, and if so, any problems with Canadian customs? How about traveling with pets?

  • The Milepost is a great guide, I would also suggest that you look at Alaskan Camping by the Church's (Rolling Home Press I think) also posting in the RVing in Alaska and Canada, would get more responses.

Lots of mis info in this thread.

read the right laws of gun registry in canada.

    http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/information/visit/index-eng.htm

read what guns are restricted and which are not.

you will need, a passport for every body on board, a dog rabies certificate for each dog. and an import license for each gun you are bringing in. and 25 dollars Canadian for each license.
  • Don't take firearms into Canada. You can take a rifle in with the proper paperwork but it's not worth the hassle and paperwork. And don't take any ammunition either. If you have any allow point ammo, I think they consider it to be military ammo and the fine was $1 or $1.25 per bullet. If they find any ammo, or used shells that you might save reloading, they're going to go through your RV because they'll think the gun is in there someplace.

Welcome to the Forum. In the upper right there is a block that says "Jump to Forum". Click on it for the drop down and look for "RV in Canada and Alaska" - there's a whole section on it. Then click on "GO", it won't switching without clicking on it. Spend a lot of time reading.

There are two particular good threads. Read Roll Call Alaska 2015 and last years 2014. I thought there was one for 2013, but I didn't see it when I quickly looked.

  • By chance are you going this year 2015 or by chance 2016. We currently are planning for 2016. Read so much about Alaska we are really looking toward it. We figure on departing Waco about May, and returning around Aug/Sept time frame. We would have this year but had already committed to other trips.
  • Driving the Alaska Highway is a great experience, however it is a two lane road, some of which is over tundra. There is a lot to see along the highway. I would advise you ride on the top half of you gas tank. Gas is available but there is not a station on every corner. Drive to the conditions. Slow down over frost heaves and through construction areas. There is a very short season for highway construction and the hard winters are hard on the roads so there are always repairs being made.

Traveling with pets is not a problem. Many folks do it. You must have current rabies certificates and although not required a health certificate can be useful if your pet has any health conditions and you need to visit a vet. We took our dog without any issues.

Now to the firearm question. Unless you have a specific reason for taking a firearm, leave it home. Handguns are not allowed in Canada and shotguns, I believe, need special permits. On my four trips to Alaska I have yet to feel a need for a gun of any type either in Alaska or Canada.

You might want to get a copy of the Milepost which is a mile by mile guide to the Alaska Highway with information on locations for gas, food, scenic areas, and camping.

We are hoping to return to Alaska again this summer ourselves.
