GFCI does not trip by current, it trips .....
Well think of a teeter Totter, perfectly balanced so the board lies flat if no kids using.
Two kids get on both weighing exactly 50 pounds, It does not move. Someone has to "Start" it teeter-tottering.
Now take off one of the 50 pounders (leave the other on) and drop a 100 pounder school yard bully on that end, WHAM that end hits the ground.
The Teeter-Totter is the GFCI
The two kids are the black and white wires.
The "Weight" is the amps (or rather millaAmps (mA) flowing in the wires.
If the end of the totter-teeters it shuts off. That simple.
