I think you are right when it comes to hotels. Most are business class hotels like best western, holiday inn, etc. Seem to be around that 105 dollar with breakfast affair.
Long range is certainly being done regularly and not by people proving it can be done. Superchargers and DC fast chargers are quite often but not always located to places like Starbucks, Walmart etc. A 400 mile trip really takes no longer in an EV than a gas car for most who take a lunch break and the occasional pee or walk the chihuahua break.
The problem, and it’s getting worse by the day as more people buy EV’s, is that the hotel has maybe 4 charging stations, first come first served, ditto the restaurants.
A friend thought he had it all worked out to drive his Tesla to Florida for the winter.
It turned into a huge fiasco and took more than double, nearly triple the time he estimated it would.
Charging stations were full, broken, hooligans unplugging his car at night in the hotel parking lot, etc., etc.
Yah. That is a thing. And we are seeing it here in B.C. as well. This year 8 percent of all new vehicle sales are Electric and its accelerating. The province is doing a good job of coordinating the installation of DCFC stations with both public and private entities. But it’s getting away on them and everyone sees the game needs to be stepped up. Hotels need to quadruple their level 2 destination stations. Those that do will be the winners because more and more people are picking their hotels based on charging facilities. We do for sure. So far it hasn’t been a problem but 2 or 3 years down the road it could be. But it is improving every day and level 2 chargers are fairly cheap to install. The next 10 to 15 years will see lots of change.
Taking a quick look at plug share there are 4 new DCFC’s within a couple hundred kilometres of our house. All in the last couple months. We rarely use DCFC but they are handy on road trips.
