The logical solution to the recharge downtime while travelling is to create an integrated infrastructure allowing to quickly and safely replace the vehicles discharged battery pack with a freshly charged pack. You would pull into a 'fueling station', an attendant will remove your pack and install a fully charged pack. This could take a few minutes and even be automated to where no human involvement is needed. The vehicle needs to be designed to allow this.
Tesla did experiments with this and actually set up a location. But generally speaking most don’t mind the 20 to 30 minute break every few hours. The facility was eventually shut down. With version three Supercharging now out average recharge visits will be under 20 minutes. Although some can not afford that time many others are pretty laid back with getting a coffee, pee break, walk the dog etc after a few hours in the drivers seat.
And remember that most don’t charge at Superchargers unless they are on a road trip. The vast majority of charging is done at home in the driveway while you sleep. There will never be a need for as many fast chargers as there are gas stations. Best estimates are 15 percent but some feel even those numbers are high. Charging at home is also usually about a third of the price.
Workplace level one and level two charging is also starting to grow a lot faster than many thought it would. Especially in high solar output areas.
