I am from North Yorkshire. Camping in England is a lot different to Canada or the US. Most campgrounds are what you saw, just an open field. Some are actual farms with a field designated as a campground. I remember camping on the cliff edge. An open field, no fencing to stop you from going over the top into the sea. Land is a premium so you will not find any huge parks with lots of trees and private sites.
