Equinox vs. CRV – Freeway Ride?

In spite of the title, I’m not looking for bashing of either car. I’d like to hear from someone who’s spent significant time in both; 2012 - 14 CRV and 2011 or newer 4 cyl Equinox. I’m wondering if the Equinox is smoother or quieter as a freeway cruiser. With it’s longer wheel base (112 vs 103) and heavier weight(3,800 vs 3,300 lbs), I’d expect the Equinox to provide a more pleasant ride (but be a little less fuel efficient and a little less desirable as a toad). I’ve driven both, but only for 20 min test drives.

BTW - I’m aware of the history of better reliability with Honda products than GM products. I’m also aware the 2015 CRV isn’t towable (there are plenty of 2014 models on lots at this time).

Thanks
  • Thanks for the feedback so far. Has anyone spent significant time in both, and can describe the freeway ride?

I know the 3,300 lb CRV will tow easier, but am wondering if the Equinox will be better for the occasional 5 hour drive (E.g. So Calif to Mammoth)

My wife's 2013 Accord with 14,000 miles on it has been to the dealers for 4 TSB repairs, more than any car we've ever owned. This Accord replaced her 2003 that lost a transmission (common problem for the V6) after only 150,000 miles. Not sure I see the advantage of owning a Honda.
  • The tires our CRV came with were noisey. I replaced them with quiet
KUMHO tires and they are much quieter.

  • I am a Honda fan and have had accords for years. I like the looks, size etc of the CRV. BUT: I just cannot like the CRV. It is noisey and unless you up grade to get a model with power seats it is uncomfortable (for me anyway). I have tried nearly every year except for the 2015 model and there has been no change to me.
  • Love my CRV.. used to be a GMC owner but upgraded in 2012.. wil never go back to GMC
  • Equinox for the win!

I am always surprised to see how many CRVs (even considering all model years look the same) are on the road. They are underpowered, antiquated styling, noisy and a rough ride.

Everyone who buys them must have traded from an old Jeep CJ or they have overdosed on the Honda Kool Aide. :)
  • I can't respond to the Equinox but my 2013 CR V exl is the noiseist vehicle I've driven. It's much noisier inside that my chevy duramax diesel truck. You can hardly hear your passengers talkin over the road noise.
I'm planning to sell my crv and get a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited asap
