The designers idea is different than yours
You were an American visiting , you wanted to see as much as possible
You weren't going out for the weekend or short holiday, you weren't going to one destination, you were touring
I said it would get most to their destination, and i think that is a correct assumption
I did not say it was practical for touring or extended driving
