Expandable Water Hose

I have 10', 25' and a 50' hard water hose and was thinking a "flex or expandable" water hose would take up a lot less room. I was wondering if people were using them for their RV city water connection?

I use a couple for around the house and they seem to work pretty good.
  • The thing I hated about them is whether you need 2' or 20', you had to uncoil the entire thing for it to work. And then, to put it away, you had to force out all the water. It took more time to use it than it was worth in storage space.
  • Never heard anything good about them. They fail quickly. As Seen On TV = fail! on this one.

Those green frying pans work very well though and hold up pretty good over time too!

I tried the ones that roll flat. They fail too.
  • I think the sun will get them.

I used one for washing my truck and as a black tank flush hose so I left it laying outside under my fiver while I stayed in Phoenix last winter. One day I hooked it up and glanced over at it just as a section ballooned up and then burst. This was winter so it was not exposed to summer 100+ degree temps. These things have a 'hose within a hose'. My impression was that the sun deteriorated the outer cloth-like shell, which provided support to the inner hose, and once that was breached, the inner hose had nothing to stop it from ballooning out till it popped.

I personally would not use them for drinking water hoses. They don't seem to be made of the same rubber material as my white hoses (obvious I know), so I don't know if it's safe for that. I would use them for black tank flushing, etc, but would not leave them outside where they could be affected by the sun.
  • The first one I bought for the house was a green 25" 1/2" hose with plastic fittings and it did get a couple of leaks after a few months ( I think rubbing up against the rose bushes) The second one was a black 50" 3/4" with brass fittings. I have had it almost a year now and it has not leaked at all and seems to work fine. We don't drink directly from the RV water supply so being potable does not make a difference.
  • Mine lasted all of 3 times of use in my flower gardens. Then they split and the inside is nothing more than a big prophylactic. It blew apart and soaked me and my guest on the patio. Took it back to Wal-Mart they gave me my money back. They told me they have had to refund nearly every one they have sold. It pays to buy good hoses, they will pay for themselves.
  • Be careful, they don't take high temperatures or pressures well. They are meant for short time use, not hookups.
  • I use a 10' and 25' length of Handi-Hose. This is not the expandable stuff - it is flat nylon like small fire hose. FDA approved for drinking water. Originally got it a Camping World - didn't see it listed online for them just now - but is available thru Amazon. Takes up a LOT less space (and lighter). had it for several years without issue. I do not tend to connect to water and stay hooked up that often - usually just fill my tank - so it is not laying around for weeks on end being exposed to UV, but that is the same way I used my "regular" hoses, too. • I use one for flushing the black tank. It's handy because it collapses to tiny size and takes up very little room. I don't use it for potable water.
  • I've seen too many leak as they are thin wall...also, they collect bacteria...not a drinking water hose..would be good for rinsing off rv or back flush hose...they don't hold up for long term use.
