I'll echo the "your rules."
Here are my "rules"
Sig is states camped. A couple were tent camp before my current PUP. I'm going to probably stick with states camped by any means. I may reset the counter when I retire and hit the road full time or semi-full time.
I keep a "states visited" list as well and the rules are mine for people to argue as they please. I needed some metric so here is what the DW and I came up with.
1. Driving through does not count.
2. Camping counts as visited but overnight hotel for sleep only doesn't count.
3. Appropriate planned stop counts even we don't stay overnight.
Examples:
- day visit to State Park/National Park counts. (visited Teddy Roosevelt NP as a day trip. Yes, most warrant more.
- researched stop at a local mom and pop restaurant counts. McD's doesn't, interstate or otherwise.
We've only invoked the Mom and Pop restaurant clause a couple times. We purposely bob and weave on our trips to catch states and usually try to make at least a two hour stop based on recommendations from travel websites of something of a local flavor.
- We need KY, DE, WV, and AK to hit all 50. Kids also need AR and OK. My fault when traveling near those not to realize they hadn't visited there.
