Once we retire (2yrs) we plan to take the 5er and travel to every nation park and many historic points around the country. This morning she expressed concern about leaving all her friends for such a long time. Has anyone else had issues with this?

Travel and do what you want while you can. You don't know what life will hand you tomorrow.Your friends will be there when you get back. While you're traveling you can keep in touch by cell phone, Skype and email.Enjoy your travels.

Absolutely. DW talking 3 months, I want 6. Been working on this for 2 years and she only moved 30 days. I haven't given up though. For a while I went on the premise that I was driving and she had no other choice. Then, in a stroke of low level genius, I realized she does the cooking and could just starve me out. Kinda like an old western movie. So it's back to the drawing board; or more likely a 4 month trip. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

Go while you can, and enjoy! Think of all the new people you will meet, and all the new experiences! There will be time to reconnect with old friends! Invite your friends to meet you at a special place while you are on your adventure.

If you can't guarantee your condition tomorrow, then how can you guarantee someone else's condition tomorrow?I've read some folks simply make a quick flight back home for a week if they start missing their friends and family. You could plan for a two month trip to start and agree that if you both are having fun, you can just keep going.

Sounds like more time has been spent with friends vs each other.Retirement is 2 yrs away.......enough time to spend more time with each other and wean the 'need' for friends.

X-2, While DW doesn't like to go as long as I do, we don't worry about leaving friends behind, Great Grand Children perhaps. ;)

There are currently 58 National Parks in the US park system. There are a couple in Alaska and in Hawaii. We also have one in American Samoa and one in the Virgin Islands. You might want to scale back that ambition to the contiguous US. 2 years goes by very quickly. Especially when you consider that many parks are seasonal.

They're retiring in 2 years - not trying to see all the parks in 2 years.

By nature most humans are resistant to change. It is natural to be apprehensive. Hitting the road for several months and being away from all that is familiar is a pretty significant change.
Work together to create a plan to keep her in touch with her friends and family.
I also suggest taking a couple of "dry runs" where you put the plan in action.
That should help ease her into this adventure with a little more confidence and comfort.

Yes, I will miss my friends and family. But these days, there's Facetime, email, texting, and blogging to keep in touch.
Sounds like a toy hauler could be an option. win win

My wife hates being on the road and hates camping in remote locations, which I love. I want to stay for extended periods and she can't wait to get back. I'm a loner. She likes being around people. I don't try to change her and she doesn't...well I don't try to change her.

Sometimes I just have to leave her at home.

Some people are just homebodies without outside interests and others are more adventurous. No problems if both are the same. Luckily both of us wanted to see this beautiful country of ours. It's a shame folks can't compromise instead of just saying 'no'.

We've had a lot more fun since early retirement and taking off full-timing than we ever did living in a house and doing the same things day after day. We've met so many wonderful friends who were also full-timers for a long time like us. We traveled in circles and met up at places we never dreamed of meeting. One couple we initially got to know well while we stayed in Alabama. We were in a museum in Arizona and there they were. We've met up with them again and again, some planned, some just happened.

There are now 22 of those couples who are now living in the same 55+ very active community. No one was from this area initially. We all found a new life. We have very lasting friendships now and would do anything for each other. We still have our friends from when we lived in our long ago house.

Our children always supported us in our travels and our grandchildren grew up with us traveling. They joined us in neat places at times and we took them on trips in the RV which they loved. We were there for all of their special moments while growing up - sports, important school activities, grandparents day, birthdays, Christmas. Sometimes one of us would just fly to participate in these activities with them but we made sure one of us were there. When we sold the motorhome recently the grandkids were very disappointed. Their fun came to an end, too. They even talk that that's what they'd like to do, also.
