Yes, here in PA, we are required to inspect every year, and they must pull two drums for inspection.
How many people in PA do you think never have that inspection done or don't even know they need it? I know it's way over 50% as at the campground I look for the decals. It's required on any trailer over 3K GVW or that has brakes.
South of Pittsburgh I don't know of any mechanics/inspection stations that carry the trailer endorsement to do those inspections. You have to go to an RV or trailer dealer who has the endorsement. They typically charge around $70. I can get my truck inspected for $22. My work truck is registered in Allegheny County which requires emissions inspection in addition and I get the state and emissions for less than $50. 70 bucks to pull two wheels, pull the breakaway, and look at the lights. It's a good thing if you're not mechanically inclined so to speak or one of those that just does not give a poop, but they tend to rack the RV owning public.
Do you know anyone who was ever cited for not having a current PA trailer inspection, I don't? I've slipped a few times on my state vehicle inspection and have never been so much as pulled over for that.
Even if pulled over for it they would most likely give you a warning and 15 days to have it done. The fine for not having it is $105.50, and no points. I sort of forgot about it last year. I may have an oops moment again this year.
Hmmm let's do the math. Here in Va we also have safety inspections for trailers and I don't like to have it done because of this pulling of wheels and the potential damage to the grease seals not to mention the hassle of taking the trailer to an inspection facility and bringing it back home. I've owned a trailer since moving here back in 1984 ... thats 34 years so far. Currently the inspection costs for a trailer is $16 so using that I have saved 34 x $16 = $544 so far. The current fine for no or expired safety inspection is $30 and so far in 34 years I have never been stopped or checked so for me I'm at least $514+ ahead (544 saved - 30 first time fine) and counting :B
