EZ-Pass

Can someone explain how this works in general when towing? Is it cheaper in the long run? I just signed up and had to get a commercial pass cause CT requires combination plates on pick-ups. They are sending me two transponders, one for the truck when not towing and one for the truck with the trailer. Funny too, the girl said make sure you wrap the truck one in aluminum foil when towing!

Just wondering about charges etc. Evidently different States have different charges based on weight etc. Makes sense just curious about your experiences.
  • We have 2 transponders, one for car and motorhome and one for car only, both issued free from Mass. Keep in mind that even with, not in use transponder wrapped in double aluminum foil, we have received double charges. Mass ezpass has been great in that erronieous charges have always been removed...what I am trying to say is monitor your monthly statement...and it is great to go thru tolls at 55 mph without having to stop, all legal...wherever equipped for high speed toll lanes.
  • I have 3 EZ-Pass transponders!
1 for 2 axels 2L(truck only) truck is under 7' tall, if over H
    1 for 3 axels 3L(truck & single axle trailer)
    1 for 4 axels 4L(truck & tandem axle trailer)

I did use only a 2 axle tag and pulled a small utility trailed occasionally, no problems.

Then I got a TC and got charged the maximum rate, because the cab over blocked the tag and didn't get recorded. $50 (4H) for traveling form Buffalo to Poughkeepsie!

Got that straighten out an then they told me I needed 3 tags, sent them to me no charge with shielded bags to keep them in.

This is for NY (www.ezpassny.com), go online google EZ-Pass state for specific details.
  • You can get an EZ Pass from different states. Although living in Ohio now, I've kept my New York EZ Pass due to no monthly fees and I have a transponder for my truck and car. I use the same transponder in the truck whether I'm pulling a trailer or not.

Any EZ Pass toll discount depends on the state or municipality in charge of the road. For example, at one time, in NY the toll for the Grand Island Bridges was discounted a little if using EZ Pass. I can't think of any recent trips where there was a discount for using EZ Pass, but since I use it all the time, I really don't pay attention other then to check my monthly statement.

The biggest reason for having EZ Pass is not having to worry about toll money and being able to use "EZ Pass Only" toll lanes and avoiding waiting in line. I would never want to go back to worrying about getting tickets and then digging out toll money when exiting. It's so much easier just having the account linked to a credit card and having it replenished $25 at time.
