Hair spray will set off the propane detector as well. Don't ask me why as I do not have a clue; but it does!
I do know this for a fact but I think the hardware store smoke, CO and propane detectors are 120v; perhaps with battery back up. As such, they would only work when you are plugged in. Or by battery if battery back is there.
Our 5er is in storage a ways from here so I do not know if they are 12v and battery or just battery. I would think they are 12v and battery.
