I agree the factory brake controller will always perform better than an aftermarket one, after all, look at all the vehicle dynamic information made available to the factory brake controller.
Something was wrong with your P3 or its installation/wiring. When set at 10, which is 100% of available power (Vbatt) the P3 on full braking or by sliding the manual level all the way should have provided 12 volts to the trailer's brakes.
If your IBC is set at 5, 50 percent of Vbatt or 6 volts is the maximum amount of power than will be provided to the trailer brakes. Something was wrong with your P3.
