Not RV related, but I was tenting along the way. I'm on a motorcycle, riding from the Midwest, I found a dumpy little motel, on the beach, in Oceanside California. While unloading my bike, guy from room close by comes over, says "you gotta chine". I said pardon me? He said "you ain't got no chine, bike ain't gonna be here in the morning". I noticed he had a bike chained up to the canopy post by his room. I noticed his Ohio plate, expired. When I saw him again, I asked if he was from Ohio, and did he realize his plate expired? He said "not no more, I'm wanted there, can't get no plate for here".
Anyway he was right, as darkness came, so did other bad elements, many of them! Well I had no chain, but I did spend much of the night sitting in a chair, outside my room by my bike. Lesson learned, camping can be safer than a motel, depending of course, on where you are at!
