I can take, or leave, a campfire. When fire restrictions are active, we really don't miss having a fire. Instead, we'll play games, stare at the stars, or even turn-in a little earlier and get up a bit earlier the following day. If fires are allowed, we may have one and roast marshmallows, etc. There's so many other things to do, it really isn't a big deal.
For me, the joy in camping is exploring the trails (whether hiking or running them), watching the sunrise and set (especially love the sunrise), watching and listening to the various wildlife and just plain ol' hanging out with mother nature.
Honestly, not having a fire just makes one less thing to worry about.
