fire extinguishers: how many and where?

Entrance door, and by the bed. I think it is a waste to put one in the engine compartment or the propane bay as I won't waste time going into one of those areas if I am already outside of the RV.
Now, if you are talking about one of the automatic systems, I would consider the engine compartment, propane bay, rear of refrigerator, rear of water heater, rear of furnace. Of course, money is obviously no object here.
