A halon-type extinguisher is likely going to be more effective, and much less messy than a chemical type. The halon type units seem to "seek out" the flames, which is a benefit when fighting fires under the dash, engine compartment, or other confined spaces. But once you use it, get out to fresh air asap.
Note: in some jurisdictions, the halon extinguishers have been outlawed.
