That's correct. The last next door neighboring RV that started a rip roaring fire was on a night where it was 95F+ in the daytime! I was like; wtf!? I moved several spaces away.

Ahhhh nostalgia! I well remember the days we used to have our 4th & New Years bonfires, huge (REALLY huge to a little kid) piles of old railroad ties, telephone poles and old tires. The mixed aromas of burning rubber and creosote...what sweet memories.

Pres-to-logs (sp) are great. They are made from compressed sawdust with an added binder. They usually don't snap, crackle, or pop, and burn pretty hot. In heating stoves, we used to burn them whole, but for campfires we whacked them into discs about 2 inches thick (any thinner, and they burn VERY fast!) As far As I know, since they are processed wood, they can be transported anywhere. If I am out of touch with reality (again), please let me know.

Heck, why not just go with a good tire fire? That could burn your entire stay at a campground. Think of the convenience.

I think in some parts of the country they sell things like "pressed Logs" that are made from either saw dust, or some other sort of bio material. I've never seen them myself but, did see a video with a pressed log in it once.

There are many who simply do not want to be bothered with wood. And there are times and places where a wood fire is either discouraged (high risk of fire spreading) or simply prohibited for one reason or another (Extremely high risk for example). I'm also kind of loath to build a wood fire on a paved parking lot (Trunk or Treet, made Smores one year, Very popular Trunk). (Sued Pit-2-Go and genuine wood since the P2G keeps it up off the pavement)

Plus you have the mess of ashes, Remember man that thou art ash and to ash ye shall return.

I have pitched the propane fire in the same lot (Gave out candy that year) on a grassy lawn where I did not wish to kill grass, and in a few other places.

That said... I do like building a wood fire, Do not care to maintain it but I do like to build it.. Wife liked to sit around it and maintain it, So we got along real good fire wise.

Sadly.. I don't build 'em much more.. Though I may this week, some nice prior occupant of this site left a pile behind.

We are newbies but we have both propane and charcoal BBQ's and can carry firewood. I see at our local stores several different wood substitutes. Can anyone compare and contrast those?
