After boon docking in the deserts around here and in Mexico we tended to have LARGE fires and the old standard fire poker was not doing the job, to close and to many singed fingers and things plus the kids always wanted to help.
So I got a piece of rebar and made one, it is 5 FT long and has a handle and a hook at the end to move things around. Now I can move things around and be safely away from the fire. This one has been in use for 25 years. Now the grand kids use it too and stay far from the fire.
On the Left is a standard fire place poker.
