Here are a couple of my favorite fir tools:

The splitter and 4# hammer both from Harbor Freight for about $20 allow me to easily split larger logs/rounds into nice fire ring size pieces. This is a lot safer than swinging and axe or hatchet. X2 on a piece of wrought iron or an old fire poker (we have a gas fireplace inside the house and a aboveground freestanding fire pit in the back yard).
I was cruising our neighborhood in the golf cart and came across a house they are framing. Stopped and asked permission to collect the scrap 2 X 4"s and 6"s and they said sure. What I picked up they don't have to. Scored a big tub of very nice wood that I can take across state lines. :B
