There was a tragedy near by last week. A climber lost his life on Superstition mountain. He was climbing alone, so not much is known about the details, but he didn't check in when his family expected him to, so they began the search. A good lesson, I thought everyone knew, don't hike alone in this kind of dangerous terrain. Anyone can loose their balance, no matter how good or young or in shape you happen to be. So sorry for his family.
When we volunteered at that park you would not believe how many 'rescues' had to be made. Not all were needed. People would hike up late in the day and couldn't get down when it got dark so easily called for help. Some were rescued because they didn't carry enough water and they got thirsty. Some climbed so high but were afraid to come down. People have no sense when it comes to hiking, especially if they're not experienced with mountain hiking.
...and for all this, the helicopter was called in, the fire trucks came along with the ambulances, multiple personnel were on the scene and get this....at that time, and I don't know if it's still true....they didn't have to pay for a thing. The taxpayers paid for their 'rescue'. The park rangers could tell you some really dumb stories of hikers.
