First tow with new 2019 Ram 3500 and ...disappointed.

Thank you all for the replies. It is not a short bed truck for whoever "guessed" and I'm crabby so apologies now but I even said "long bed" :)

And I really do appreciate people taking a moment to post things to consider. Fifth wheel is new to me, Andersen hitch new to me too. I had read plenty and talked to several different RV dealers, I thought I was making a good decision.

I will take a look at some of the other options. Good news is the hitch is brand new and while I might take a bit of a loss if I have to go that route and sell it, I'd rather deal with it now and not later.

With my Anderson, I make sure to re-torque the hitch after the weight of the camper is on it, per the instructions. Really helps.

I have wanted to try the Anderson hitch but what you said is the reason I have stayed away from it.

I have a different set up, a 3/4 ton Chev with a 32' 5th wheel that weighs in about 11K. We bought the B&W Companion, but no one helped me position it, I had to do it by trial and error. One of the questions about the Anderson Hitch, does it have any adjustments? The B&W has a lot of adjustment options. My first attempt was to place it as far forward and try to set the trailer level. I found out that that caused all kinds of chucking and such. On our first trip with the 5th wheel we drove to Yellowstone, so every night I would move the hitch back, up, down, etc, until it felt the best. I also have a gooseneck horse trailer that pulls like a dream so I was really disappointed with the fifth wheel at first. I have gotten used to the difference in how it feels, but it took a while to get it good. I also found that if I have a full tank of water it rides better, that actually puts weight in the back, which would lighten up my pin some. So, if you don't have the ability to go by a new air ride hitch, and if the Anderson has some adjustment, I would start there. As others have said, load it up with your typical gear first, check for level, and then start adjusting things. With a 1 ton long bed you should be able to get better results than I can with a 3/4 ton short bed.

Towing heavy trailers is not as easy and some make it sound.
Weight distribution is the first thing to look at.

Due to the high hitch design, fifth wheel trailers generate chucking forces (fore/aft) that are transmitted to the truck. All solid joint hitches, of which the Andersen is one, will effectively transmit those forces to the frame of your truck. All trailers differ as other factors such as length, axle design and weight distribution come into play. This is why you will read many anecdotal threads regarding fifth wheels not chucking with various hitches..

There are many pin box aids such as MorRyde that would help with your chucking problem. I had a similar problem except my wife lasted only a half an hour because the chucking was so severe. I fixed my problem with a Trailer Saver TS3 air hitch.

If you have a short bed Ram, I wouldn't reverse the pin adapter on your Andersen hitch. You will tow fine for many miles but there will be a time when you are backing tight on uneven terrain and could take out your rear window.

Here are some suggestions: Sell the Andersen while it is still new and get yourself an air hitch. You have nice new gear; why not protect both your truck and trailer with a soft joint hitch? The Reese Goosebox will help with chucking due to its low hook up point and reduced hitch angle. Tow with the trailer level and load your trailer at the ends instead of over the axles, more pin weight is better.. This will reduce the tendency of the trailer to rotate and create chucking forces.

If your setup has the ability to use the TS3 and you are willing to drop the money, you will be thanking me everytime you tow. As your trailer goes over a bump, the pin pushes down and forward at the same time. Due to the high hinge design, the TS3 compresses and retracts at the same time, dissipating both bouncing and chucking forces.

I would also tend to agree......not enough weight on pin/trailer. If problem still exists after loading, dump the hitch and get a B&W.

Let me guess, short bed truck, and Anderson puts center of pin behind center of axle?

Trun the anderson around and put the center of pin forward of axle.

I have a 19 Ram dually using the OEM 30K fifth whell hitch, pulling a 40' 18K trailer and no issues.

I have an 2019 Ram 3500 4x4 dually pulling a 16000 lb. 5th wheel. Truck has the Mopar M20 (Curt) hitch and trailer has the Reese 5th Airborne pin box. Pulls and rides great. No chucking or clucking....

The specs on that unit show a 2200 lb pin weight. That should be plenty. I'm thinking nose high.

Strange other Andersen hitch owners claim that the hits solves chucking.
Does the 5er tow level? That and get some weight on the pin.
