Here is a small "catch" in your fishing idea. Each state has regulations regarding fishing licenses and price them for residents and tourists... during your travels you will be a tourist so will need to buy a fishing license for each and every state you fish in. I mention this because here in Florida they can take everything you brought with you to fish as part of the fine. Add that to the price of a boat rental, kayak, inflatable boat or whatever. DON'T FORGET THE LICENSE.
FWIW, as a "tourist" and hubby being avid fisherman, we've bought licenses in many provinces/states over the years and we've found that Florida ironically has been the fairest on annual license price of most we've encountered at $47/year I believe, and hubby more than gets his use out of it. As a heads up and worth checking at each area you are visiting - for example Venice Pier Fla, and some other counties/structures throughout the USA and Canada, don't require a license to fish. We found the same in parts of California and other areas, so before buying a license do check on any piers/locations that are license free zones.
Our biggest bone of contention on approval and additional costs now, is the new rules on stickers of inspections for even kayaks and inflatables of certain sizes required as you cross into various states. Appreciate protecting the waterways but it's all starting to add to getting cost and convenience prohibitive. There has to be a far better way to handle this than currently set up, but as with all opinions ........ everyone has one.
Enjoy your fishing, it's a wonderful relaxing sport with a splash of excitement (pardon the pun), thrown in for good measure once in a while to boot.
