Don't know if it would've helped or not, but I would think this is a great reason for having a bedsaver attachment on the hitch! Was it possible the pin slid out just enough that the trailer closed the coupler?
And just to get it straight. Was the pin still attached to the trailer? Was the retaining ring still in place on the bottom of the pin?
