Well it sounded to me like the OP said the pin broke off of the 5th wheel and that it was still locked in the hitch. Another great lippert product I'm sure!!

As I mentioned earlier, I would love to hear more clarification, and reason for the separation.
If the op's handle looked like this and he looked at the kingpin in the jaws and it looked like this the ONLY way there can be separation is for a mechanical failure.
