I worked for Dowell Schlumberger for 12 years. Another trucking outfit for 5 years. For both, you hitch and pull, then drag your sorry behind out to look at the pin with your company supplied flashlight. You must check the box on the pre-trip report.
Firing offense for not doing it this way. Everybody submarines (High hitches) at one time or another. You would be surprised at how far a truck can go. Up hill and down hill and around turns, with the pin just hanging over the 5th wheel.
Never saw a fifth wheel fail. Get a bar hitch if you don't trust the jaws.
