The OP stated he was sure that the trailer wasn’t ‘High Hitched’ because the bottom and top plate didn’t show a gap between them, that would be a reasonable assumption. However, having high hitched myself, I can testify to the fact that from the front or side view you may not notice any gap, especially a ¾ to 1 ½ inch space you might expect. Since the bottom plate tilts with the load of the trailer, the front half of the bottom plate closes the gap to the top plate. I would not have discover my mistake if I hadn’t looked in from the rear and saw the pin resting on top of the jaws.
