OOKAY.. I call BS... go back and look at the OP post....separation at 65 mph? and the rig is 25 feet behind them resting on its legs?? with some cable that is 25 feet long?? What cable? WHO are we kidding here? I'm sorry but this would not happen ...the trajectory of a 5th wheel trailer going that fast after a seperation would have torn it apart... especially the landing gear!!! and the tow rig if it was connected to it.... Give us a break!!.. this is a fake post...REALLY!! OK so your tailgate is damaged what about the RV??? I'm done showing you why...don't buy into it until we see real (supposed) evidence....Let us don't get tricked into a hitch war better yet!!
The tailgate was held by its support cable. the 5`er was 25ft behind the truck. The only thing I can`t figure out (like you) is how the jacks didn't fold under when it disconnected at 65mph!
The pin/pin box slides of the hitch ramp and first lands in the bed. At some point the breakaway plug is pulled and the trailers brakes are activated pulling the pin/pin box into the tail gate and on out the back of the bed.
The landing legs at this time may be only a few inches above the pavement. The OP didn't say if the legs were damage which doesn't mean anything.
Having pulled trailers for a living and being around a busy loading yard I've seen several high pinned trailers and resulting drops.
In all cases there was no 1 1/2" gap. These were with OTR SAF-Holland....Fontaine.....Binkley and two different brands of lightweight (RV) hitches. It happens even with pro's drivers and commercial grade equipment.
I've had two high pins and there were no 1 1/2 " gaps. One side was flush and the other had maybe 1/4" to 1/2" gap....on another the entire front was flush with a small gap in the back and of course the jaws were closed with the pin sitting on top of the jaws.
Most rv folks have never seen a high pin 5th wheel trailer or had one happen simply because they haven't aren't around doing this several days a week and each week in a year....for years.
JMO..... A couple of posters need to chill out and wait for the OP to come back with answers which may take a few days or even weeks before he hears back from them.
