After looking at mine more closely,(real close), it is possible to have the pin engaged and the lever in the locked position but after that, the only way to open those jaws is to have the safety pin missing. Can the arm open on its own without the safety pin in place? YES it can. Was it there? With that said, Only one more thing that I believe is possible and that is sabotage. If they left that truck at any time and he did not have a lock on the arm and it was just the safety pin that comes stock, someone could have reached in there and took the pin out. I would believe that could happen. Who would do such a thing? You never know anything is possible right? You could pull it like that for awhile but it is possible to shake it open if you jar it around just right.... and or G forces under braking can swing it open. Now there is still the question was there a lock on that arm or just the stock safety pin? The plot thickens. Either way, I'm still shaking my head at the original story. I say if you have left your rig for any period of time you should always walk around and check it. ....AND if you don't have a lock on your hitch lever get one now!!!
