No your mis-reading it....I did not say that this spring keeps the jaws closed...it is "attached to the cam" that keeps the jaws closed, but in reality the only thing that keeps those jaws closed is the pin when it is inserted in the lever....I am explaining that the spring could help hold the lever closed better by being bigger and having more tension or preload on it. The existing spring does little if nothing to hold the lever in place. Regardless... if there is no pin of some kind in that lever it can come unhitched. Again there should be a catch of some kind to hold that lever closed even if there is no safety pin or lock. It is too easy to overlook in my opinion.

Does anybody have pictures of this Reese double jaw that was mentioned earlier? I just hate to ask and turn this into an off subject and hitch war but I would like to see the difference. Is there another thread on this subject someone can throw us a clicky?
