Flat Tow or Tow Dolly

I'm looking into a new car and have a choice between FWD and AWD, the car is a 2018 Ford Edge that can be towed four down. If given a choice which method is preferred. I have all the Blue OX equipment except the base plate for the new car? I figure the cost for both is about even. Any thoughts? I've towed four down and it was no problem. Thanks

  • Done both, won’t be doing the dolly ever again..

Having said that, it depends how you travel. If you go back and forth to FLORIDA seasonally, a dolly is fine.

If you do lots of short trips or disconnect often, dollys suck.
  • I have done both. I towed a PT Cruiser on a dolly from MT to GA.
    No problem.
I towed a Jeep four down from MT to Moab, UT, and from MT to the Black Hills (Deadwood, SD), and from MT to NV, and many miles in MT.
    No problem.
Both were annoying to hook up in the rain. I won't tow either way in snow. I will not attempt to back up with either system.
It depends entirely on what YOU are comfortable with, and it depends on what vehicle you want to tow.
Front wheel drive vehicles that can not be towed four down (like our PT Cruiser) are great on a dolly. Four wheel drive (or All Wheel Drive) vehicles that can not be dolly towed (like our Jeep) must either be towed four down or on a trailer.
    Good luck, and choose wisely.
  • If you go with the AWD, you must tow 4 down. Had a dolly with previous FWD toad. Now tow AWD Edge 4 down. Like 4 down much better.
  • Have done both and prefer 4 down. Dolly towed fantastic, but load and unload was a pain, especially when raining.
  • Four down.... no thinking on that one for me. Yes, I have towed 4/down and would not deal with a dolly.
