Flat Towing Honda Element

I have a 2007 Honda Element and I cannot find anything in the owner's manual about flat towing. It doesn't say you can't, it doesn't address it at all. I found instructions for towing a 2003 Honda Element. My question is, does anyone know if there have been changes between 2003 and 2007 that would affect the ability to safely flat tow a 2007 Element?

Element has the same drive train as contemporary CR-V models, and is just as towable, following the CR-V instructions. Because the Element was targeted to a lower price point, price of car did not cover the additional warranty cost of covering damage from recreational towing.

As you noted, earlier Elements included towing instructions. There were not changes in drivetrain, but as Honda built experience with warranty service costs associated with flat towing, they restricted it to the CR-V which could sell at a high enough price and volume to cover the additional warranty service costs.

Similar issues with Accords, Odysseys, Pilots, Civics, which Honda said were flat towable until warranty service started eating their lunch.

Approval of recreational towing is often more an economic/business decision than a technical issue. There was a time when almost all Toyota models were treated as flat towable until Toyota figured out what this was costing them, vs the small market for flat tow capability.

If it is beyond warranty period and mileage, you are towing at your own risk, regardless of what the manufacturer said.

if towing 4 down increases warranty costs, I guess that sort of confirms that it is hard on the vehicle to tow it 4 down?

  • I posted this info some time back about towing Honda Element taken from Honda's American website. Though doesn't indicate model years?

Your Element can be towed behind a
      motorhome at legal highway speeds
      up to 65 mph(100 km/h). Do not
      exceed 65 mph (100km/h).
      Otherwise, severe transmission
damage will occur. To avoid damage
to the 4WD system, it must be towed
with all four wheels on the ground
      (flat towing).

Always best to confirm directly with the vehicle manufacturer (not dealer) no matter what tow guides indicate.
  • I have been towing Elements for years. Elements have an identical drive train to the CRV which until recently was deemed towable by Honda.

My 04 had the procedure listed in the manual. They took it out of some manuals in 05 then officially ok'd all 05's in 06. In 06 they went to a five speed in both CRV's and Elements but only OKd the CRV.

I have been towing a 2011 for several years now with no issues.

I follow the pre towing procedure.
  • if there is nothing in the owner's manual under either recreational towing or towing behind a motorhome, I would "assume" the answer is NO.

  • if you go to fmca.com the main page has a link for all towables for several years in pdf format.
Honda only has the CRV except the 2016 forward and the Fit is listed for a few years as towable.
  • I would go to the dealer and ask. The owners manual should address this. I know subaru does
