Flimsy locks on storage bay doors

I just bought a Class C with a really big storage area under the corner bed-great for two sets of golf clubs, two La Fuma recliners and a Weber Q. Now that it is in there, I realize that the locks and the door itself are rather flimsy. I know insurance will cover a loss with a $250 deductible, but I would rather not have stuff stolen in the first place.

The big door has 3 latches, the middle one locking and the two others non locking. I am thinking of getting two locks and having the middle latch a non locking one.

Any ideas on stronger replacement locks, or others ways to keep my stuff safe?

  • Thieves don't care about causing damage. They use a prybar, not a key. You can put $5,000 locks on a flimsy door and the prybar will break the door making the lock meaningless.
  • This post reminds me, we have a broken lock on the compartment where the generator is kept.

I'll get these for the replacements:

  • If someone aquainted with RV's wants to get into your RV...they will do so. Making it harder for them to break in will cause them to go to level 2 and then the real damage to your poor RV cargo door starts. Trust me when I say a crow bar will mangle and pop open a cargo door or your main entry door with suprisingly little noise. I've been RVing while going thru 7 or 8 Jayco's over the last 30 years with a folding lawn chair and small bbq grill stolen. Period. And they were both NOT locked up in a storage bay.

The only real security precautions we had over the years were all members of the Canis Familiarius family...Shelties and Golden Retrievers mostly!

  • You also probably have the 751 key that anyone with an RV has for their storage compartments. They're all the same! I did what you are suggesting and made sure I used a different key on the new locks as well!!
