I would not leave my gray tank open due to this mishap. Bad things can also happen by leaving the tanks exposed to the CG sewer.
The bigger lesson is to teach the kids and double check yourself.
Turn the pump or CG hydrant off at night or whenever trailer is unattended.
Unfortunately stuff happens. That is why the insurance industry exist.
