Was your house built post - Andrew ? If yes, there were housing standards that were implemented to help keep roofs in place. AND - maybe you'll get a free new roof (shingles) out of the deal.
Tornados may be unpredictable, but hurricane winds last for hours over a much larger area.
In 2004, Hurricane Charley was supposed to make landfall around Tampa so they did have lots of warning. Only Charley changed her mind, turned right a hundred miles early, and came ashore at Punta Gorda with 200 mph winds. I think they had one day to prepare. A friend kept a boat in a marina near there so a week later, we drove down to check on it. The area looked like an atomic bomb had been dropped on it.
Hopefully this one won't be very bad and there will be minimal disruption.
