Well you may be better off with that old roof if it was laid correctly. I've seen FL roofs where staples were used (driven with too much pressure) an in a high wind huge sections of the shingles would flap like a bedsheet.
You get a lot of crappy work done at that FL $10/hr rate, even though you may be paying the head guy a lot more then that.
