Flying J diesel price

The FJ at Jack Tone Road on CA 99 was $3.75. The Pacific Pride a couple of blocks away was $2.86. Guess where I went.

FJ gambled that prices were going to go up so they contracted for so many gallons at a high price so they have to charge more.

One of the reasons that FlyingJ does not come down is the rebates the big trucking companies get from FlyingJ. So they pay the higher rate but receive a rebate on the total spent. In fact FlyingJ got in some trouble by supposedly fudging the numbers to lessen the rebate IIRC

Since I prefer to use the high volume nozzles at the truck islands (two 150 gallon tanks) I like findfuelstops.com

You can filter by brand or amenities and get all the stops along your route.

gasbuddy.com can be your friend.

Only one proviso: Some people post prices based on some discount they received instead of the actual posted price at the station. That is misleading and not helpful to others on the road.

Truck stop locations as already described above haven't had my business for a few years now.

Amazing isn't it? RV'ers still use these places and object strongly when someone points out these kind of differences in price. The Pilot/Flying J business model just does not include RVs and their prices show it. The truckers are not paying these prices, they're all on contract for much lower. Add that to the fact that FJ comes out with a new "loyalty card" or something equally stupid every year or so that either doesn't work at all their stations or has so many strings attached you need your own accountant and lawyer to keep it straight.

Since the advent of Gas Buddy and Google Earth, there's no need to put up with these rip-off artists any longer.

So why did you go to Flying J if it bothers you that much?

I just noted this in another thread about "where do you buy fuel". At Thanksgiving, we passed two Flying J's on California Hwy 99 that had fuel at one for 35 cents a gallon more than stations at the next off ramp and another that was 40 cents more a gallon.

I just don't get the love affair some have with buying fuel at truck stops. Higher prices, dirty islands and grumpy truckers. I'm 65' long and buy my fuel at local stations. Most modern stations have large islands and easy access.

My choice for best fuel prices are, Indian Casinos, brand names such as Shell, Chevron, Mobil and some local types like Sinclair and Maverick. Truck stops are my last choice and Gas Buddy is your friend. Many may not know, but when you find a station on Gas Buddy, they will often have a photo of the station giving a good idea about size and access.

Flying J prices went up after the about went bankrupt and Pilot bought them. Now the prices at Flying J reflect the higher prices Pilot has always had. I never went to Pilot now I don't go to Flying J anymore.
