All I know is that as a visitor to the state and towing on I-5 from Or. to near SF, hwy 99 to Bakersfield and then I-15 over to Nv. is that with our speedo pegged at 65 mph using C/C and GPS, is that it seemed like 99.99 percent of the commercial truckers passed us. Sure, I wasn't counting them, but it really was the vast majority of them that passed. There was no time that I left trucks or passenger vehicles behind when travelling at 65 except for trucks on steeper hills. If California is concerned about keeping those towing at max. 55 mph, where are all the CHP officers? Maybe Socal is different?
The craziest section of freeway we were one was the short I-680 around the east side of SF. The surface is so rough and in need of re-surfacing that it beats the snot out of the truck, TT and your body at 65 mph. The 6 lanes of traffic darting in and out everywhere makes it an extreme challenge when towing. I can't imagine attempting to drive at 55 there...
The 60/70 hwy limits in Wa. seem to work well. For FWs and TTs with ST tires that would be better as cops probably wouldn't bother you at 65 mph.
I love, love driving in California, especially on all the twisty up & down roads. Every TT owner should be required to drive hwy 17 from San Jose to Santa Cruz as a right of passage...
If they would only up the speed limit 5 mph for RV-ers.
