The hardest part for us was training the kids that PawPaw and Gram won't be available everyday for babysitting or chauffer duties with no prior notice.
17 year-old granddaughter was upset when she called me Jan 6 with temps of 11 degrees wanting a ride to school. Told her no, that she could walk before I could get there. And if she didn't have coat or gloves or hat - it wasn't my fault because I've given them to her in the past.
My sister complains that 'I couldn't just take off like that' - but that's part of her self imposed duties as 'caretaker' of the rest of the family. She can, and does a couple times a year, but I think she loves to complain.
My two brothers are just jealous.
I do schedule far in advance two - one week trips a year to visit my father and take him to his VA appointments. He likes me to do it because I 'understand the government and their paperwork'.
My sister's job is running a county wide school district dining/lunch/breakfast program. She does more government paperwork each year than I did in 20 years in the Navy.
Friends - some were unhappy about not seeing us as often - but we've met many more with more similar interests.
