Before you tackle that faraway stuff, Michigan is a big place and you can do a lot of one weekend (Friday night drive to Sunday summer night traffic jam) trips without going very far. Let me just run a few here.
The locks at the Soo,
The Shipwreck Museum at White Fish Point,
Tahquamenon Falls and the Pictured Rocks,
Machinac Island is mostly tourist trap, but there is history there,
Saw Mill Park and the memorial at Rogers City (lakes can kill),
Sleeping Bear Dunes and Hartwick pines,
Fredrick Meijer Gardens, The Dutch Stuff in Holland,
But most of all, don't miss the city museum there,
The artists in Suagatuck and Douglass,
The Gilmore Automotive Museum and the AirZoo at Ka-Zoo,
The Olds museum is neat if you are a motor head,
But as you are that close, spend some time in the
Elderly Music Store, (leave your wallet in the car)
You can easily burn a whole weekend at The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village (Not particularly RV friendly, but you can unhook and take the truck)and before you go any farther south,
The Cabela's in Dundee is a museum that has lots of stuff to sell too, but you can blow a couple hours just looking at the mounts. (They also have a dump and potable.) Feed the kids at the Chinese buffet across the road.
These can all be done as one weekend trips from most places in the state. There is lots in the neighboring states too, but I have to limit at something. Just take the kids. We did, and they still talk about it to their kids.
