We used to use our 2-week vacations by heading west from Michigan. Just pick a couple places which are close to each other. Go to another area the next year, etc. Even if you take three days to get there and return, that still leaves you a good week to explore some of the west. Get to your main destination and do radius exploring from there. A week is better than not doing it at all.
