My list includes:
Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Everglades and the one city I'd like to get to is DC. There are many more, but these are at the top of the list.
Other must see trips that we've completed include: Statue of Liberty, NYC, Atlantic ocean, Liberty Bell, Smokies, Disney, Niagara Falls, Great Lakes, Mammoth Cave.
Honestly... aside from Yellowstone and the GC, your list is missing out on the best scenic parts of the states, that being the beauty of the west. Call me biased but that would be an extreme shame to only see the eastern areas and not the west. Just driving through areas in the west, you get a sense of the vast expanse and amazing scenery in the west you just can't get back east. And yes, I do extensive travel for work and have been all over this country having been to every state minus about 2. Alaska being my favorite for pure, natural beauty.
Besides, Manhattan/NY area is best served via hotels to really take it in and get the "experience" other than living there.
Yes I'd love to take them west. However, we can only take two weeks of vacation at one time and we're in Michigan. So to get there, we'd have to fly and that's cost prohibitive.
I'm subscribed and following! Hope to get some good ideas.
Regarding the above comments...it is a crime against humanity if a family can't, at least once, take an extended time off to be together. If you thought outside the box, is it at all possible to make it happen once? I'm a teacher, so it is built into my schedule. However, my wife is in a critical position with a company that "doesn't make exceptions". We wrote a letter and met with the owners, explaining that our family is at a point that we will not be able to seize "later". They responded very well and gave their blessings. We weren't sure what to expect, but it was important enough to us to take a risk.
We don't know your personal situation, but I think our culture is lacking in an understanding of family time. Other countries respect it differently.
If limited to two weeks, I agree with another poster...pick one area per year and do the driving! Southern Utah would be an unbelievable 2 week trip. You could catch Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands.
