Hello, I have a 2012 Focus sedan, manual transmission. It is very simple to tow the car. Ignition is off and keys in my pocket, transmission in neutral and hand brake is released. That is all I do. The steering wheel does NOT lock in my car, that is the way it came from the factory. I hitch to my RV and tow it all wheels on the ground for as long as I want. When I get to where I am going I disconnect the hitch and drive off.
No special prep whatsoever other than installing a tow car brake system and a tow plate or base plate.
