Fort Widerness

We go every Christmas week when it is $185 per night including fees & taxes. Still cheaper than the cabins which are $500+ per night. Reservations have to be made 500 days in advance to get a site during this week. It’s not super luxurious like Motorcoach Country Club or Desert Shores Motorcoach Resort in Indio, CA, but Disney is magical in its own way if you love Disney Corporation.

We go frequently to the Fort. Agree with the idea of joining or asking questions of the Fort Fiends. All types of inside info. from folks who frequent the Fort and WDW.

At our ages now, we don't necessarily want to go to the parks often. But, the Fort remains a priority camping destination for us. We refer to it as the "unDisney" component to WDW. The campground is very laid back compared to the hustle and bustle of the hotels and parks. One can actually relax while on vacation.

The cost IS expensive. You get what you pay for. Free bus transportation to anywhere on property. You are only a bus ride (or boat ride) from some of the best restaurants in the country. Highly maintained comfort stations that are cleaned multiple times a day, beautiful landscaping, and in most cases sites that are adequately separated from each other, often with shrubs providing some privacy.

There are sidewalks throughout the campground that encourage people to walk from point to point, ride bikes, or jog. There is security constantly in the Fort, both Disney and the Orange County Sheriff, patrolling the loops, so campers "feel" safe. Often, you may find joggers out early morning, or kids out after dark. You can walk from the Fort over to the Wilderness Lodge for a meal or drink, or you can take boats from the Fort to the Contemporary Hotel or Wilderness Lodge, or a boat to the Magic Kingdom.

We just paid $650/night last May for club level and dining plan at the Polynesian, and that was WITH military discount. :E

Wow! Military sure pays better than it did when I was in. One night was more than a month's pay.

If you think Fort Wilderness is experience just look at the price of CG around the area plus the cost to park it's not that bad all things considered.

Try to get a site near the boat dock. We were in the 400 loop and could walk to get the boat to the Magic Kingdom, the store,the Hoop De Do revue, the pool and the Chip and Dale show. So any loop from 100 to 500,plus 700 is close enough to walk most places.

I forgot to add that IF you have a dog you need to request a site on a pet loop. When I've done that using their online reservation system, we're not always assigned a pet loop. I usually call in after I make the reservations to make sure we actually are assigned on a pet loop.

We camped there in 1977. Cost was an outrageous $14.50 per night. Having to evict a family of armadillos from under our Scout camper at 2AM made it all worthwhile though.

Blast from the past. When I first camped there the steam train was running around the campground. Told my dad how much we have to pay next month - he told me he paid around $35 when he first camped there. I remember using tickets to get on rides.
